SouthWest Sound has been in continuous operation since 1984
when it began recording local bands from a downtown storefront. Original
owner, Tom Mehren, started the business from a small inheritance to create
a comfortable space for creative musicians to flourish. After a brief stint
as staff engineer, Devin Thomas took over daily operations of the studio
and began expanding and improving services to include computer-based digital
recording.

In 2001, SWS relocated to its new home at 49 South Baldwin Ave (one city
block from the original location). Devin Thomas designed and built a new
studio vastly improved from the original while carefully maintaining the
comfortable, stress-free environment that SWS clients had grown to appreciate.
For the past 30 years, SWS has played host to artists such as Exene Cervanka
(of seminal LA band X), Nicky Hopkins (keyboardist for The Rolling Stones),
Alex Acuna (Weather Report), Eric Marienthal (Chick Corea Band), Robert
Kyle (Kilhuaiha), Incendio with Jim Stubblefield, Ralph Leighton (Friends
of Tuva), as well as members of Dread Zeppelin, Eddie Money, Melissa Ethridge,
Oingo Boingo, Sergio Mendez and many others.
Projects completed at SWS include comedy CDs by George Carlin, Universal Studios
performance groups, film scoring and mixing for “The Desilu Story” a
Bravo Network release, CDs by Natural Elements recording artists, various rock,
rap, folk, blues, pop,
contemporary christian, gospel, big band, heavy metal,
grunge, alternative, jazz groups, opera, books on tape (Simon & Shuster)
and music for relaxation.
In addition, SWS has recorded groups from various countries around the
world including, Korea, Russia, Kuwait, Zaire, Bolivia, and (one of our
favorites) Tuva!
