Devin Thomas,
a native-born Californian, attended The California
Institute of the Arts where he earned a BFA degree in
Music in 1981. Shortly after graduation, he began his professional recording
career by landing the position of chief audio engineer at SouthWest Sound
in Sierra Madre. Thomas recorded many local bands before founding the successful
Doors tribute band Wild Child which played concert dates throughout Southern
California, Nevada, and Arizona, as well as touring India in 1986. Returning
to Sierra Madre, Thomas took over operation of SouthWest Sound full time
and began expanding the business, upgrading the studio from 8-track, to
16-track, to 24-track digital, and eventually to its current “state
of the art” 64 plus track digital facility.
In 1987, Thomas toured the USA with Oingo Boingo
as a keyboard tech and the following year founded an original “new
wave” group called
Night School with Oingo Boingo’s keyboardist Michael Bacich. Night
School played throughout Los Angeles, Hollywood,
and the greater Southern California area where it
attracted dedicated fans and received critical acclaim. |

When the group disbanded, Thomas began teaching classes
in recording and MIDI production at SouthWest Sound and served as
an advisor to the Pasadena City College telecommunications
department where he helped develop a recording program
for the college and taught an advanced course in digital
recording that proved popular and continued for three
years.Along with two partners, he formed the record label,
Natural Elements, INC. and began producing albums for the label as well
as its publishing arm, Red Pyramid Publishing. The label released over
a dozen CD projects, and received airplay on THE WAVE as well as American
Airlines in-flight programing. Two years later, Thomas returned to teaching,
this time at Citrus College where he taught classes in record production,
synchronization, digital editing, and the music business for two semesters.
Thomas next moved to a larger facility and began an
expansion of the services offered at SouthWest Sound. The newly remodeled
studio included additional mixing, scoring and mastering
rooms and an improved ergo-dynamic design. Regular
clients were relieved to discover that the new studio
was still within easy walking distance (1/2 block)
of shops, restaurants, pizza parlors, Starbucks,
and more.
Thomas has written film and television scores
including theme songs for ESPN sports network and scored “The Desilu
Story” which
aired as a special 90-minute presentation on
the Bravo Network as well as on French television. Thomas is a member
of BMI and has served as President of Natural Elements Records, Inc. He
is a recording artist, producer, composer, studio owner, and audio engineer.
He has written product reviews for New York-based Gig magazine as well
as Home & Studio Recording,
has three original world-jazz CDs in release
featuring a lineup of outstanding world class musicians such as Eric Marienthal
(Chick Corea band) on sax, and when he is not "in session",
he is finding time to play chess, finish his screenplay, design keyboards,
and complete a fourth collection of original world-jazz compositions soon
to be released on iTunes.
